Any ideas when the NOD32 update will be released, the one that the SP2
security centre recognises?

An announcement on the NOD32 website seems to indicate mid-September. A
beta version is available for registered users to download now.

Does the security centre recognise it?

No, the MS Security Center does not regonize Nod32's latest release version,
but it is fully functional and operational. At this time, I would suppect
that there a few AV programs that are not recognized by the SC.

The Nod32 Beta program is recognized by the SC, if you want to install it.
My experience with the Beta prorgram is problem free at this time using
Windows XP with SP-2.
