Hello,
Since a few days I'm using the personal email scanner of AVG 7. It
works reliable, catches all viruses and moves them to the quatantine
folder. The email scanner has been configured to scan all incoming
emails and
to add an certificate(to the end of the message body). But on a few
emails per day, this certificate is missing.
Have a look at the following example which shows a short extract of the
logfile:
27.10.2003 09:26:21: Received mail from: "Net Email Storage System"
27.10.2003 09:26:21: Die Datei aggoakjx.exe: Virus identifiziert:

So a Swen.A virus was detected and the attachment aggoakjx.exe moved to
the quarantine folder. But the corresponding email doen't show the
certificate. See the source text of this email how it arrived in my
local
news- and mail-server (Hamster):

Has anyone made the same experience? Is it simply a AVG bug, or does
anyone see something irregular in above listings?
Many thanks in advance for any help.

I have been trying to figure out why mine has never added a
certificate to either outgoing or incoming. I finally gave up and
assumed this was something that they said was part of the program but
wasn't actually there.

I have been trying to figure out why mine doesn't seem to work right either.
I configured it to add the certificate and when I ran a test email to myself
the certificate arrived as an attachment to the email which, because of the
rules that I set up in OE, promptly sent the email to the delete folder as a
possible virus. What's up with that?
If anyone could explain how to get this feature to work correctly with OE, I
would really appreciate it.

In OE I never get attached certificates. In Outlook this happens if
Outlook is receiving an html-email (which can be seen when being opened
:the window title bar ends with (html)) and the AVG Outlook Plugin
has't been installed.

That is how I have mine configured. I just sent myself a test email (my
email is configured to receive HTML) in OE and the message showed up with an
attachment. The attachment was the AVG certification.

The AVG icon does spin when I receive emails. I noticed this the other day
when I had a large attachment come through. I think that the small
attachments come through so quickly on a cable connection that I did not
notice it before.
When I go into my details on the accounts, it appears that AVG is using 5100
instead of 5200. I am running Zone Alarm Pro, which I believe also has some
mail checking abilities, and wonder if the port is different because of
this?

Thanks a lot Eckhardt, that has solved a puzzle i was struggling with all
week !! I have AVG 7 but could not get the certificates attached to my new
btinternet account,in Outlook or Outlook Express. Now after reading your
posting,it's solved Can i just verify one thing? To have the Outgoing
certificate attached in Outlook, you must send email in Plain and not HTML or
Rich Text ?
Cheers once again,

To get certificates for outgoing mail is a bit more complicated than
for incoming emails. What I wrote just was related to incoming mail.
I haven't configured scanning outgoing emails, but at least some hints
by heart, i. e. without practical experience. In contrary to incoming
mails where one (POP3) server entry in AVG Personal Email Scanner can
serve all email accounts, now you have to generate one SMTP server
entry for every email account you want to use as your email address. So
when you add a new server entry for Personal Email Scanner in AVG
select 'SMTP' on the 'Server type selection' window, then on the next
window enter your account's SMTP mailserver name or IP-address, select
a local port (different for every email account), check the box to
activate this server entry. Then modify in Outlook or Outlook Express,
same as for incoming mails, each account, but now for SMTP (server
name, port).
If you're stuck, come back.
You can send any format you want.

Hi Eckhardt, Thanks a bunch for the info you are providing. After
checking what you said to check, it was not configured to virus check
email even though it said that is was. Not good for a piece of
software to install and take you through the configuration process and
not do what it says it is doing. No doubt it has never checked on bit
of email since I installed it.
Okay, so I go and manually configure it the way you suggested.... I
get an "Authorization" error now. Says user name or password wrong.
I go back to my "normal" configuration in OE6 and everything works.
Okay, I then see that AVG7 has an email setup wizard and use it. It
ends up setting up AVG7 and OE6 a lot differently than your manual
method but the outcome is the same... "Authorization" error when
trying to access my account. You would have thought the Wizard would
have gotten it right but then you would have also thought the original
setup wizard from the initial installation would have set it up from
the start also.....
Could it be that AVG7 email checking and Adelphia Powerlink email
accounts are not compatible?
Anyway, I needed email checking so I uninstalled AVG7 and put that
dreaded bloatware Norton AV2003 back on and it is checking my email
just fine. And Norton does not reconfigure my settings in OE6 like
AVG does in order to do this for some reason?????
I hate Norton and the horse Symantec rode in on but its the only one
working right now for me.
Regards......

Where? In OE? If so, then your login to your ISP mailserver is
misconfigured. The problem can be either in AVG or in OE.
1. In AVG once agagin check if your server entry for the Personal
E-Mail Scanner looks like this:
POP3: port: 5200 host: ", server properties "USER/COMPUTER" , local
port "5200", server status "ACTIVE"
2. In OE verify if under Tools/Accounts/Mail/Properties/Servers
'Incoming e-mail (POP3)' is set to "127.0.0.1" or "localhost", and
'Account name' to "youraccount@ISPmailserver" (I myself must enter here
"1087241@pop.gmx.net" - without quotes, of course). You can either use
the mailserver name or its IP-address. Finally check on the 'Details'
page if 'Incoming e-mail (POP3) port number' is same as in Personal
E-Mail Scanner ("5200").
> Could it be that AVG7 email checking and Adelphia Powerlink email

I suppose, no. The only thing I can imagine is that your mailserver is
not POP3, but IMAP. In that case you have to change your settings in
AVG and OE accordingly.

That is by design. It's your email client which is and stays
responsible for delivering all login information (account, password).
What you have to change in your email client is the SMTP server which
has to be addressed: no longer the external one (your ISP SMTP server),
but now your localhost on that port you have assigned in Personal Email
Scanner.

Did you use in Forte Agent the same SMTP port as assigned in Personal
Email Scanner for this SMTP traffic?
