I'm not having much success manually updating the Free AVG anti-virus
program. I go to:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/24/us/frt/0

and I'm given a short list of downloads (all in .bin format). I've
downloaded each one and placed it in a folder on my HD. Then I do a manual
update within the program and point it to that folder. But I always get a
message saying "no file found". Can anyone give me a short tutorial about
this, and point out which of the downloads I really need. I want only to
update the virus database, not make any changes or additions to the
application or the way it works. Thanks.

Why the convoluted approach?
Why not just right click on AVG in sys tray and choose "Check for
Updates"?

Oops, missed that.
My guess is that past a certain point, current database files will only
work with the most current version of the program, so you'd need to keep
that updated also.
