having heard good things about Kaspersky, I thought I'd try it

downloaded the trial version from their website...

but it can't complete a system scan

it freezes on individual small files and won't go beyond them

these seem to be ordinary setup files that ran at OS installation
rather than files for active processes

so delete that file...
it freezes on the next one
and so on

3 so far:

c:\windows\inf\unregmp2.exe
c:\windows\system32\shmgrate.exe
c:\program files\outlook express\setup50.exe

scanning with the following scumware detectors finds NOTHING:

Ad-Aware
SpyBot S&D
CWShredder
HijackThis
Kill2me

Since you are running a Beta program you may experience problems, especially
with AV software. Some other AV companies have already stated that their
current version is or may be incompatable with SP-2 beta or otherwise.

well, supposedly build 2162 is a "release candidate"
more a gamma than a beta Smile

for reference I decided to try nod32
and this seems to be running fine

slightly off-topic, but still relevant
if Kaspersky ( or any app for that matter ) is thrown by the presence of
SP2,
surely it's in the developer's own interest to state that on their download
page

I didn't see any prominent warning of that ilk on kaspersky.com
when I downloaded the trial version...
if it's there and I missed it - it needs to be more prominent
