Over the years most versions of McAfee (Enterprise) have fallen foul of a failure to update
because of a problem with the Framework service.
The McAfee tech support forums have contained a number of fixes (depending on the
exact cause of the problem), and it's been pot luck which is right for you.
One of my users just attacked it from a different perspective...
Maybe this will help somebody else; maybe what he's done will break something else.
With 8.5i on XP, he did this:
I have run the services.msc with start/run and clicked on the McAfee Framework
Service and tried to start that. The windows has answered that another service
blocks this one so I have checked the Dependencies. I have set the Remote
Procedure Call's (RPC) Log On tab to Local System account and clicked on the
OK.
I have restarted the windows and try again. After the next start the
windows has
showed that the Performance Logs and Alerts blocks the service so I have set
this service as a Local System account too.
After a new reboot I have removed the McAfee and reinstalled again. Now the
McAfee virus scan is operating very well.
