Post subject: EZ Antivirus Question
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

I have EZ Antivirus and EZ Firewall as free one-year subscriptions installed
from the MS CD. My version of the AV is 6.1.7.0. It seems to be checking
for updates on a daily basis. Info shows the Major Dat File to be v4008 and
the Minor Dat File to be v5988. I just read the entire recent thread about
this program and went to the website to check for program updates. I can
log-in with my password, but the only thing it will lead me to is an offer
to buy the 2005 program. Can I not update my version of the software to the
current version without purchasing the program?

Same types of questions go for the firewall.

Thanks,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa......

I have updated the EZ antivirus up to the latest (7.0.5.3) just last night.
BUT......I never opened the firewall part of it because I had ZAPro and
wished to continue using my older version of it. Like you, I figured I was
stuck with the older download version. Nope.

I would suggest writing to CA and asking them. I did and they were quite
helpful. But I am not sure about updating the whole thing. I got the link
for the AV update on this n.g. and perhaps whoever posted it could do it
again.

Best...Heather

I'm not familiar with EZ but is there an "Update" button on whatever type of
control panel it has? You might need to right click on a taskbar icon to
open the interface. That would be the way to go.

On free and bundled wares they often limit the features knowing that when
you need them you will be led to want to buy their pro model; which
everything seems to link to.

This is merely a thought--hope it helps.

There is no Update button other than for new defs. You have to download the
newer version which they seem to forget to tell their customers about.....I
have complained many times in the past about their lack of
communication.....and this was with the *pay version*.

I have also noted the lack of any indication of a possible *program* upgrade
availability ( I was a beta tester of ver7 of EZ-av and asked about that ).
The uinofficial response was that they are considering that but are strongly
divided about how to implement the 'feature'. Should EZ-av occasionally
check to see if there is a newer version of the program or just provide a
button where the user could explicitly check? If there is a new version,
should they ask the user whether they want to download it, download it and
install it on the fly etc... Their concern, I think, was that many novice
users (apparently they have a lot of those) may be confused by the process
and might in fact mess up their installation by blundering through the
process. I often notice a new *program* version by spotting something in
this newsgroup - no idea how those posters find out themselves. Perhaps they
periodically check the CA ftp site looking for a recent timestamp?

I mentioned in my beta responses that I would like (at least) a way to
explicitly check my program version versus the latest one available and I
would be quite happy to then follow a link to download a more up to date
version.

In that case, I salute you... and thank you for doing so.

Me too.......otherwise I wouldn't know. That is why I sometimes also give
out the news that there are new defs for spyware programs.

BTW......there are two new sets for Spybot today. Download from within the
program.

Cheers.....Heather
