A friend has an infected XP (NTFS) PC.

I understand that I can run a DOS scanner from "Safe Mode" *with* "Command
Prompt" in order to disinfect the PC.

I'm trying to use F-Prot which did pick up a few infected files but it seems
to have problems scanning the entire hard drive. Could this have something
to do with the NTFS filing system?

Gareth.

f-prot for dos won't work very well in that environment... you'd be
better off using the command line scanner that comes in f-prot for
windows (the filename is fpcmd.exe)...

Okay I'll try that. I suspect that the command line scanner isn't free -
still, probably more than worth the investment.

Here's a thought - not that I've tried it. Remove your current infected HD
from the system. Get an inexpensive hard drive (or just hold onto a hard
drive you have replaced) large enough to install WinXP and your AV program
onto (if you run into activation problems, call MS and explain. Format it
for FAT32 if it isnt already. Attach the drive to your system as the boot
disk and install WinXP and your av program onto it. Now, attach your old
WinXP NTFS drive as the non-booting disk (either as selected in BIOS or by
attachment to the secondary IDE controller or as a slave drive). Use the AV
program to scan the old WinXP NTFS drive after booting from the FAT32 WinXP
drive. After your done, just boot from the old NTFS WinXP drive. Bit of a
pain, sure, but perhaps less of a pain than a reformat and reinstall.
