Post subject: Symantec Corporate Edition Version 9.0
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

The agency I work for, bought the Symantec Corporate Edition Version 9.0
through Tech Soup. I have workstations that are a mix of WIN98, XP Pro, Win
2000.

Although there is a WIN2000/Citrix server on the LAN, my supervisor insists
that all AV be installed on the workstations as unmanaged and not server
managed. We're using MS Outlook and Outlook Express.

Anyhow, the problems: after the install on WIN2000 and XP Pro, I can no
longer perform a chkdsk. I've used the chkdsk /X, the /D using the command
prompt. I've tried using the windows' built in applet and the chkdsk does
not run.
It just goes through a normal re-boot. Sometimes it will give the error
message that the disk can not be accessed but that message is rare. Normally
it just reboots.

I also can not get a good install on any of the WIN98 systems they still
have. Midway through the process, the install asks for another
disk.......the Install has only one disk.

Any suggestions to either situation?

Why would your boss buy the product than not want to use it correctly?
Why would he buy a managed AV system and not want it managed?
Why does your boss still have a job?
This looks like another example on an IT manager who doesn't know what
he is doing.

I'm using 9.0 (with the newest patch to 9.0.0.1400) and do not have any
problems using chkdsk on any of my drives, nor was it a problem on previous
builds of SAVC.

Are you positive that Symantec is at fault?

I have to agree, except my boss is a she not a he...I was blown away when I
started here and saw the set-up. I'm in NW PA and jobs -of any type- are
scarce.

Are you positive that Symantec is at fault?---> well... I deleted the
Symantec from an XP Pro and a WIN2000 box.....running chkdsk was successful.
I re-installed the Symantec.....chkdsk will not function other than an error
message stating that it can not examine the disk because it is does not have
sole access to it.

I don't make the decisions here. I'm just a low life flunky doing what the

It took several days to find it :

Chkdsk.exe or ScanDisk fails to run on Windows XP after installing Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0
Situation:
After installing Symantec AntiVirus 9.0, Chkdsk or ScanDisk fails to run
upon restart. You may see error messages similar to "Cannot open volume for
direct access."

Solution:
Symantec is aware of this problem, and there is no solution at this time. We
will continue to track this problem, and this document will be updated if
new information or a solution is found.

So now, because your boss is an idiot, you not only have an AV system
that is not installed correctly, but also has issues with the OS causing
additional issues. To workaround this you will need to touch everyone
of those machines since you are in unmanaged mode, to apply the
workaround. The workaround will then leave those machines slightly
compromised by Symantec's own admission. If they ever bother to write a
fix for this, you will then have to revisit these same machines to once
again apply the fix to each individual machine. My question to you is
why does your boss have a job? You also realize that when her bosses
find out about this, she will probably blame you and you will get fired
because she is an idiot. Yes, I am a little bitter since this is
essentially what just happened to me.
