Post subject: Content.IE5 folders kept giving me BSOD's while doing Ad-Aware SE scans.
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

I got the new Ad-Aware SE last night. As it was scanning, my computer would go
into protracted BSOD's and I'd have to hard reboot. So, during the third try at
this, I watched closely to see what file it was crashing on. It was the
Content.IE5 folders, where some of the folders have over a thousand files in
them. The one I saw last had over 4,000 files in it. So I went to each folder,
clicked on the "Modified" button so the files would be most recent to least
recent; scrolled down to the bottom, and spared the ones that said
"desktop.ini", then highlighted all the rest of them using the shift key. I then
deleted all them files in each of the dozen or more folders (it took 90 minutes,
from a months' worth of cleaning out of that bunch of folders; they were cleaned
a month ago). I got a prompt to save "groups.com" programs (MS-DOS), so since I
don't know what that is about, I saved those when prompted during deletion.
Explorer kept crashing while doing deletions (Win 98SE), so I really had to
fight with the machine, wait patiently at times, and reboot a few times.

On the next Ad-Aware scan, the scan was completed without incident.

IE6 is no better, if you want a good browser without the huge spyware,
virus and hijacking problems I suggest using firefox instead. Its way
ahead of IE. I've tried most browsers and firefox is the best by far.

I also use thunderbird as my email/news reader instead of virus prone
outlook.

Upgrading both programs is painless, all your bookmarks and email
addresses are transferred to the new programs as part of the install
process.

Everyone I know that has tried firefox has deleted IE within a week of
trying firefox. To my knowledge not one has regretted the switch.

Best not to recommend /deleting/ IE as removal of this browser-like
operating system component could damage other Windows functions. You
still need it for Windows updates. Best to update it to the latest
(ancient) IE6 and get it patched as well as Microsloth can do, and
then just park it.

If you do online banking, you may still need IE as some banks'
webmasters have been sprayed with clue repellent. Solution: change
banks. <g> Refuse to buy anything from online shopping sites that
require it. Tell them why you bank or shop elsewhere.

I know of one such person who can't figure out Mozilla or FF/Tbird,
but he is a stubborn 77 year old gentleman who also got hit with the
clue repellent. Every time he tried them, he would get frustrated and
go into a rant. <g>

Firefox/Thunderbird, the Mozilla suite, or even Opera are good choices.

I used to use opera and got hooked on tabbed browsing, although its
compatibility withs sites using client side scripts leaves a lot to be
desired. Firefox solves that problem and a bunch of others along the
way. I really love the adblocker addon for firefox and the imagezoom one
is a ripper too.
