I have been using AVG but have been looknig for something less obtrusive
and maybe better. I don't like Avast. I notice that CA EZ Antivirus is
free for a year at the moment. Is it any good? How does it compare
with AVG and NAV, for example?

It is very good.....I have used it for years. It updates pretty well every
day or so...AVG doesn't. NAV is bloatware and is not recommended for anyone
using WinME. I got 3 viruses using NAV many years ago and then went to
InoculateIT PE, which was the freebie that became CA.

It's an either-or type OS. Either it works and you're happy with it, or it's
an absolute horror from install to eventual format-by-frustration.

Based on personal experience, the latter is more common than the first. I've
not seen a single stable WinME box. That doesn't mean I believe every single
box is unstable, but it has by far the worst track record of any MS OS I've
worked with.

Well....come on up here and check this one out. (G) It is pretty darn
stable. It also has its moments, but I have dealt with them and not much
fazes me after Win95!!

I have never had to reformat, btw.....that is strictly a last ditch
operation. And I had a real mess on here after trying to upgrade to
XP.....left a lot of XP folders on the HD after I uninstalled it. So I
carefully figured out what I could remove and did. And I am no tech, by any
stretch of the imagination!!

After casually reading some of your observations, I'm quite convinced
now that you are just spewing gibberish.

Just read his gibberish now.....and yes, you are quite right. I get tired
of people running WinME down when they have never, ever used it.

Thanks......Heather

I am always curious about reports of ME being so bad.

Whilst I don't use it these days, I did for about three years when with
a business that had it and always found it to be good and quite stable.

What is the main problem with it?

Nothing!! Those that complain about WinME as a rule have never used it.
And I have for 4 years and know its quirks and good points.

I do have XP Home here ready to go, but the company who built this computer
(MDG in Canada) put in a really old motherboard and I have tried to dual
boot with XP, but get nothing but crashes. And this old motherboard
(American Megatrends, 1997) will not support a second hard drive either.
So my computer tech suggested I just go with WinME for another year and then
he will build me a new one, using NEW parts.

Btw......he also told me that he had never seen such a fast WinME O/S and he
couldn't believe how *clean* it was. That is because I learned a lot from
the MS MVP's and keep this machine *lean and mean*.

Cheers....Heather

I have two computers, one running XP Home and the other Millennium.
The computer running ME crashes far more often, and error messages are more
numerous. IMO, it's outdated. Windows 2000 or XP is the way to go. Much
more stable.

Just so I stay barely on topic, EZ AntiVirus is a good program, but I
prefer the free ones, Avast or AVG. Of course, if you're a Road Runner
subscriber, EZ is free.

You're wasting finite space with observations one would accept coming
from an 8 year old. If you really have nothing to contribute, just say so.

Full support for ME ended December 31 2003. It's now covered by extended
support. That means only critical security fixes are taken care of.

As for people running down ME. No other Microsoft OS is so well known in
tech circles for having serious issues on a large amount of machines. I can
see how that would make someone a tad jaded with regards to it.

Like I said before, if you're happy with it, good for you. But the fact is
it is the worst of the lot in many a tech's eyes.

Did they ever fix the memory leak in it? It used to annoy the hell out
of me having to restart after an hour because system resources would
drop from 94% to something in the 40s....

Quite true......but OTOH, I have never used MS support. Don't need to when
I have the MS news groups to assist with a problem. And my biggest one so
far is the inability to put XP or a second drive on here, but that has
nothing to do with WinME......and everything to do with being sold a
computer with an inferior motherboard.

Forgot to mention that I use Firefox, not IE.....thanks to some of the
regulars on this group. Haven't seen a piece of spyware since I started
using it last December.

Never experienced a memory leak......but there were numerous posts on that
and equally numerous rebuttals. I never paid much attention to those claims
because a) didn't have the problem, and b) the *memory loss* usually turned
out to be something else. Haven't seen one for a while on the MS groups.
