BitDefender Question

I am using BitDefender 8 Free Edition with Windows 98 SE.
When I check "Status" the "Virus Shield is not loaded" is not checked.
Does this mean I do not have virus protection?
If so, how do I load it?
I have tried clicking on the box to no avail.
