I am having problems with Avira Free updating, automatically or
manually. I have performed the steps mentions in the Avira support
forum to clear temp files from the "All Users" folder hierarchy, ran the
preupd.exe utility from the Avira programs hierarchy (no joy),
restarted, and tried again. OS is XPSP3.
Is anyone else having similar problems?
TIA,
Mike >> Stay informed about: Avira Free Update Problem |

I've been having the same problem for around 4 days. It finally updated
yesterday but it would not do it yet today.
I have heard that if you have the paid version, it updates from a different
server.
I believe it is just a server problem on their end (for the free version
which I use). >> Stay informed about: Avira Free Update Problem |

Yes, their download servers (and homepage) are "overloaded".
As a "stopgap" measure you could download the latest virus definition
file (IVDF Unicode) here:
http://www.avira.com/en/support/vdf_update.html
and do an "manual update" from the downloaded file.
- Start Antivir
- Update
- Manual update

My updates are now working after a very odd sequence of events.... read
on
I've just downloaded and installed Avira free. I couldn't register -
couldn't create an internet connection (I was already connected using
broadband) and updates weren't working. Internet Explorer couldn't
connect to the internet either (I use Firefox) so I searched for a
solution to that.
One of the instructions was to disable my firewall, I looked for Zone
alarm and it wasn't running (I had decided to use the windows firewall
instead). Panicking, I quickly loaded Zone Alarm (without disabling the
windows firewall).
Zone alarm asked for permission for IE to access internet and trusted
zone I gave it both. Can't remember if it asked for permission relating
to avira or not, but everything sprang into life. How wierd is that?
Very odd. Windows firewall is still running.
