If you want a free-for-personal-use av that isn't crippled in that
particular way, I suggest the AOL AVS product:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
It's based on KAV 6 and it uses the same data bases as the paid
products. It lacks the proactive defense (PDM) and web
protection modules, and just includes the file and email modules.
I've been using it for some time now, and I like it very much.
It's very configurable and flexible for experienced users. Just
don't opt for the Toolbar during installation.

Just a question: what's wrong with Avast?

Personally, I'd be concerned about a product sponsored by AOL if I
didn't want the occasional AOL advert (or jabber advert, etc.). Who
knows, if this isn't an issue yet, maybe it'll become one. AOL is not
unknown to sell advertising space (just look at their "updated" instant
messenger client). Now, I'm not hating on AOL, since it is their right
to seek some sort of compensation for their services, even if it's
through adverts. Just be aware that they may be in the future if
they're not already there.

For AOL AVS testers, just make sure you do not install the Security
Toolbar. That's the "dirty" part.
