I have posted here many times how to go about re-installing NAV 2002
to renew the 1-year update period.
Assuming you still have the original program CD, the steps are:
1) Go to add/remove in control panel and remove:
- NAV 2002 (or NSW 2002)
- LiveUpdate
- LiveReg
2) Search for and delete any directories that contain "norton"
and "symantec" in the name of the directory, along with all
files and subdirectories. You must delete all symantec and
norton files (related to NAV anyways) for the re-installation
to work. I believe that the specific file that must be
deleted is "catalog.livesubscribe" which may be marked as
a hidden file.
3) re-start the computer and re-install NAV 2002 (or NSW 2002)
from the original CD. Make sure date is set correctly on
your computer. Skip any requests to "register" the product
or fill in any personal information. After re-installation,
the program should indicate that your new expiry date is 1
year in the future.
4) You will now be facing about 10 mb in 3 rounds of downloads.
In each round, you will see check-boxes where you can indicate
whether or not to download a specific component. Leave the
"re-director" component as the last item to download during
each update round or session.
Notes:
A) Since you are on dial-up, and since you use Netscape 4.7 (as I
do) mostly for e-mail, you really don't need an AV program
running on your computer. Netscape 4.7 doesn't auto-execute
attachments and isin't vulnerable (really) to malware in
e-mail like Outlook is.
B) Downloading 10+ mb of updates on a dialup connection will be
a challenge.
C) Disregard advice from others regarding running special un-
install programs from Symantec for uninstalling NAV 2002. The
Symantec uninstall programs are really only for NAV 2003 or
newer. You do not need to use a special uninstall program for
NAV 2001/2002.
D) Some have stated that NAV (2002?) still uses some resources
after you "get rid of it". This is not true. The NAV 2002
uninstall process does not delete various NAV program files
and directories, but otherwise the program no longer executes
or runs in the background once you uninstall it.
E) Despite what others say, NAV 2001/2002 are quit thrifty in
their use of system resources and are not much of a drag on
a system.
