I have been trying to update my AVG 7 (which is otherwise running fine)
but have never been able to connect to the server for updates. Nothing
else has changed in my setup. Is anyone else having problems? Have
been updating from the website instead, but would prefer auto update.

two things: (try to run the auto update then..)

first- check avg's log, see if there are any records of it being
blocked/allowed
second- check windows event viewer (click start/run> eventvwr ) and
click anti-virus tab.. there are usually logs regarding updates, you
can double click the entries, see if that gives you anymore details.

Flamer.

Yes, but all of the AVG .exe's are listed in the "exceptions" list. Is there
some other setting I need to change?

If the update problem has always been there for you, check the AVG
forums:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/forum/lng/us/tpl/v5

If it's a recent problem, could just be the server's busy, though I
just now updated AVG Free 7.1 with no problems. You might try adding
this to your HOSTS file, to use another Grisoft server:
193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

Uh...no Smile. I just now updated AVG Free 7.1. See:

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5
"AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."
