Post subject: AVG re-installation problem
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

I've got myself in a bit of a mess here:

AVG Free started refusing to update; not the usual problem accessing the
server, but rather not seeming to attempt to contact the server and coming
up with an 'update unsuccessful message that I've not seen before.

I uninstalled, rebooted and attempted to re-install to be given a message
"AVG Free edition cannot be installed because there is already a full
version of AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 installed on the computer". There isn't of
course, and if I've ever installed the full version then it was some time
ago and I've installed the free version at least twice since then.

I then downloaded the trial full version 7.0 and ran its uninstaller,
rebooted and attempted to install the Free edition again; same problem.

I attempted to install the trial version 7.0 and received an error message:
"Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AVG7Uninstall\Features:
creating registry key....
Access is denied. (5)"

I'm running XP SP2.

Does anyone know what's going on here? Is there a more appropriate group for
this?

Thanks for any help

Andy

I encountered the same problem. I deleted the items you mentioned with
a registry editor. Then I was able to install the free version.

Obviously I'd have thought of that myself if I had half a brain:-)

I had to go into Safe Mode to do it for some reason, and even then I had to
delete every entry at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AVG7Uninstall
seperately because it wouldn't let me delete the whole lot at once.

All sorted now anyway, thanks for pointing out the obvious.
