Using this program, it puts the following message at the end of each email,
which is fine -- I like that. But it also puts a graphic (line), which
appears in the in-box list as if that email has an attachment (little paper
clip shows up). This is not good since I can't tell which emails have
'real' attachments.

Anyone know a way to suppress this graphic and still have the certification
text-only included?

ok, first it has nothing to do with certification, it is just a text,
this can be created by number of ways.
Should the software allow to switch it off, do it, because something
adding things to your mails can be a big problem once you come to
digital signatures or encrypted mails. If such mails are modified
later, the signatures will definitely be wrong and decryption might
not work then too in many cases.

AVG free edition. - Apparently this (which I've been cheerfully using these last 6 months) is going away from Jan 2007. Anyone like to recommend a suitable replacement .. 'free' is about the right price. Just AV - firewall, spam, and similar cr&p I can do some other...
