Hi .
I just found out about AVAST.( free 4 home )
It has fantastic reviews.
I use AVG free at the moment because it does not
slow my machine up like Norton Or Macfee did.
Does AVAST use much resources and should i use it
over AVG free ?
Any reviews , advise welcomed.
Cheers

Avast seems to be light on resources. One very good point in favor of
Avast is the tiny downloads of updates. 2KB to 15KB; yep, kilobytes.
It does not download the whole database every time. <g>
So far, in over two years, it has never failed to find a suspected
file I've pointed it at.
Updates come generally daily, sometimes more often. If you're online
on a cable/dsl connection, it will look for an update about every four
hours, and update in seconds. And it's skinnable.

When AVG changed his EULA that gave him more control over my computer
than I was willing to give up, I switched to AVAST. Thanks AVG!!!
Avast is fast, updates fast, and hasn't missed anything yet. There is
hardly a day goes by that it doesn't update & the updates are so fast
they are over before I am aware they started. You should be happy
with AVAST!!

I switched to avast about a year ago, I like the avast updating, plus avg
insisted on telling me an old file I had contained a virus. The file in
question pre-dates win3.1!!! File in question was part of logitech mouse
developers kit, so it probably contained suspicious looking code making low
level calls.

Avast takes 3 to 5 seconds total!!
I'm not BSing either. If you haven't tried it, don't knock it. I've
used both!!

- Easy on the system
- Painless updating
- Stable on my 3 xp systems
- Boot time scans
- VRDB allowing the 'repairing' of certain files
with earlier, clean versions
- Seems to have a good detection rate
I've heard of folks using both avg and avast monitors at the same time but
I've never tried it. Nex >> Stay informed about: AVG or AVAST ?? |

One more vote here for Avast!. I haven't had any problem with it and the
updates are seamless, (though it's a bit trickier for the laptop that uses
Internet Connection Sharing through my desktop). I seldom get a virus sent
to me, (Yahoo's junk mail filter prevents almost all of those), but the few
I've gotten it warned me right away before the attachment even hit my disk.
With AVG, I never was certain it was interfacing correctly with Outlook
Express.
It also has 7 different services that you can turn on or off based on how
you use the internet, (P2P, Internet mail, Exchange mail, WebFilter, IM,
etc.) I also feel that it has a small footprint and isn't a big drain on
CPU cyles.
Excellent product, in my experience. With this free product available I
have a hard time seeing paying for AV software AND paying yearly fees for
updates.

Actually, ezAV is seamless as well and very light on resources - and
free for a year! Worth a try.

I think it does scan attachments - I recently sent myself an email with
eicar.zip attached and I'm pretty sure it did detect that on reception.
