I just downloaded Ad-Aware's aaw.2007.exe
Problem: My Grissoft AVG program looks at this file, and tells me:
"Threat Detected!
While downloading file C:\download\AAW2007.EXE
Trojan horse Downloader.Generic5.PIO"
Is there a problem either with Ad-Aware 2007 or with Grisoft's AVG?

Old Enought.
I tried downloading it this morning and my system would not allow me to
save the file... I am using AVG, but turning it off I could not save it to
the folder I established to place the download.
I then un-installed AVG, and then tried to save the file, still could not
save the file, it told me the hard drive was full, or the file was in
use...
I reinstalled AVG, and have downloaded the file to my Linux computer,
saved it to a memory stick, but can not copy it from the memory stick to
the windows machine...
However I had an older version of "ad-aware personal 1.6" saved on CD...
I was able to copy that to the computer, but it had a 2006 defs.ref file.
I was unable to replace the older file, using the "Check for updates now"
link above the start button.
I went to lavasofts home page with the linux machine located a download
link, for the latest definition file, and downloaded the winrar file.
Again using the memory stick I moved the file, unrared it to the desktop,
and dragged it into the program file, replacing the older file... Ran a
check and located a few cookies, but nothing major... Do not know why my
system is rejecting ad-aware and its downloads.
I also ran the on line ewido.com scan, that found a few more cookies, but
still no major surprise...
I also updated "spybot search & destroy" and ran both Ad-aware, and SS&D
in safe mode without finding any new infections of malware...
Right now I feel I have something wrong with the system, not being able to
download the package or copy it to the computer via a memory stick without
any anti-virus package installed, but I can-not locate the problem...

Don't know about JR the postman.
I was on the http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ site, the next page was
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php then I was
re-directed to
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-Free/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?p...=dl-ad-
and finally to
http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10719977.html
As soon as the file was filished downloading, I got the message as
quoted in the OP
Hope this helps you to help me!

I downloaded what seems to be the same file from www.download.com, and
both F-protect and Clam-AV say that it's clean.
The file I have is 18176512 bytes long with an md5-sum of
c81ae9805ae0cd6997076341cb72d5cb. The file is called aaw2007.exe.
It smells like a false positive to me. >> Stay informed about: Ad-Aware 2007 - problem? |

The file I have is also 18176512 bytes - to be honest I haven't got a
clue what an md5-sum is.
You're probbaly right that we're dealing with a "false positive",
however that's still a PITA.
I have been unable to find a way to contact Grisoft-AVG.

A md5-sum is a quick way to check that two files are the same. It's a
checksum. >> Stay informed about: Ad-Aware 2007 - problem? |

That would be my second choice. I would rather be able to ask the
question fom someone in Grisoft-AVG, but have not found a way to
contact them.
After all, if it is a "false positive", it is AVG that's calling a
"good" file "bad".

Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle (or something like that . .)
Since I am convinced that AVG's treatment of Ad-Aware's aaw.2007.exe
in in fact a "False Positive", I went ahead and installed the
program.
I then ran AVG again. GUESS WHAT:
It found no problems on my computer, not even in the original
aaw.2007.exe file.
Any explanations for that?
Cheers!

I can't explain it....but... I have experienced a hell of a lot of what I
believe to be False Positives from AVG Free the last month or so.
It all started when AVG Free started asking for a reboot each time the
dat files were updated...I found that some AVG Free settings had been
changed , something that I'm sure I didn't do, as I hadn't even opened
the settings options on the program for mnnths.
The latest threats I have experienced with AVG Free are all on "old"
files that have resided on my HD, some for years and have been scanned by
AVG Free numerous times in the past without any problems.
As far as contacting Grisoft about these types of problems I haven't had
much luck in the past either on the AVG Free Forum or trying to contact
the AVG Techs directly.
It seems to me just as I've experienced with McAfee who I was a loyal
paying customer to for over ten years that a lot of Antivirus program
producers will never ever admit they have made coding errors in updates
and Dat updates preferring to just produce corrected recoded updates and
ignore any users questions about the problem being errors on their part
of the software producers. Maybe I'm just guessing but it sure as hell
appears that way to me in my experiences.

Did you see this brief thread, posted after you posted to a.c.a-v, on
the AVG Free Forum?:

Grisoft provides no support for AVG Free other than what's on
